Friday B-Movie Pick: Casino Royale

Casino Royale

Not the recent Bond franchise reboot, but the 1967 comedy version. A great cast including David Niven as the original James Bond, Woody Allen as his nephew Jimmy Bond, Peter Sellers, Ursula Andress, Orsen Wells, and a few other cameo shots by actors you should recognize. I’m a fan of the Austin Powers movies, but Casino Royale proves that you could squeeze every last drop of Mojo out of Austin, and the whole batch would not be as cool as David Niven’s mustache alone!

Friday B-Movie Pick: Scoop

Scoop

Woody Allen’s latest movie. I was a bit hestitant about watching this after the horribly bad Curse of the Jade Scorpion, but I figured at worst, Scarlett Johansson might provide some decent eye candy, which she does BTW. I was pleasantly surprised that this flick was much better than the last effort I saw by the Woodman, but then that bar wasn’t set very high. At least he didn’t cast himself as the romantic lead in this one, instead taking the role of the helpful elder, sort like your goofy uncle who alway avoided those ‘respectible’ jobs. Hugh Jackman supplies the eye candy for those who aren’t into curvy blonde females. You won’t be studying this one in film school, unless you are doing a theis on Woody Allen, but this one was worth the rental and home made popcorn.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Just Go With It

Just Go With It.

Ya, it’s a romcom, but it is an Adam Sandler romcom. So expect some low brow, but damn funny humor. While swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker provides most of the eye candy in the film, Jennifer Aniston manages to slip in one bikini scene, which she handles quite well. That scene also leads to one of many great lines in the movie, “She takes spinning classes like they’re M&M’s.” Aniston holds her own with Sandler on the comedy as well. While she was hired as a pretty face on Friends, ten seasons of a TV sitcom show did give here plenty of time to hone her comedic acting skills. If you are looking for an off-beat romcom, complete with sheep CPR, check it out.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Hot Tub Time Machine

Hot Tub Time Machine

This movie was better than I expected, mostly because of good actors, including John Cusack and Crispin Glover. That and a complete irreverance for just about anything. Craig Robinson pretty much played the same character he did in Zack & Miri do a Porno, but he did it well. I watched the unrated version, so there was a fair amount of gratious nudity, which added to the mindless enjoyment of this B-Movie.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Zombieland

Zombieland

Big time B-Movie! A horror/comedy/action film. Plenty of Zombies, shotguns and humor. Oh ya, plus the occasional young girl in a short skirt or tight jeans. Fire up the popcorn. Plus a major cameo by Bill Murry, playing himself!

Friday B-Movie Pick: Love at First Bite

Love at First Bite

From 1979 comes this comic send up of the Dracula legend with a great comic cast. George Hamilton as the Count, Artie Johnson as Renfield, Richard Benjamin as the decendent of Von Helsing (who changed his name to Rosenberg for “professional reasons”), and Susan St. James as the love interest of both Rosenberg and Dracula. The movie starts out with Dracuala being kicked out of Romania by the Communist government and moving to New York City. It is a period piece (late 1970s, complete with a big dance number at a disco), but the gags are great and the cast really delivers.

Shatner & Palin, together on stage…

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

William Shatner did another jazzy reading from Gov. Palin’s book on the tonight show. Another excellent Shatner performance, which was followed up by Gov. Sarah Palin
appearing to read from Shatner’s latest autobiography, in a similar fashion. Mocking and paying tribute at the same time.

Sarah Palin vs. William Shatner

This video shows what the political hit men on McCain’s campaign team (and senior democrat operatives)  were afraid of.  Gov. Palin is charismatic, smart and willing to take a risk.

Like Shatner’s character James T. Kirk, she beat the the Kobayashi Maru test.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Transylvania 6-5000

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Next in the Holloween rampup.

Transylvania 6-5000

A deliciously campy example of the B-Movie staring Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley, Jr. Michel Richards and Geena Davis. This 1985 comedy/horror spoof tells the tail of two tabloid reporters (and not very good ones) sent to Transylvania in order to find stories that the National Star and Dan Rather would turn down.

Friday B-Movie Pick: My Man Godfrey

Friday, June 12th, 2009

My Man Godfrey, one of my favorites from the classic B&W era of Hollywood. A classic “Screwball Comedy” starring William Powell and Carole Lombard.
