{"id":2981,"date":"2011-11-14T04:55:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T08:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.urbin.net\/blog\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2011-11-14T04:55:00","modified_gmt":"2011-11-14T08:55:00","slug":"monday-book-pick-shotokans-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbin.net\/blog\/history\/monday-book-pick-shotokans-secret\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Book Pick: Shotokan&#8217;s Secret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0897501888\/eclipsswebwarren\">Shotokan&#8217;s Secret: Expanded Edition<\/a>\u00a0by Bruce Clayton<\/p>\n<p>A very interesting book for both the martial artist and the historian. \u00a0Mr. Clayton has done extensive research into finding the environment that drove the creation of hard style linear Karate. \u00a0This system of martial arts came about in a specific time and place. \u00a0A time and place that previously predominately practiced only empty handed systems based on Southern Kung Fu systems. \u00a0Those systems had to be empty handed systems, because possession of a sword or any other restricted weapon by an\u00a0Okinawan\u00a0was punishable by death!<\/p>\n<p>The first half of the book is pure history. \u00a0The second half breaks apart the Shotokan katas and points out the hidden techniques.
