Friday B-Movie Pick: Blade: Trinity

Friday, June 1st, 2018

Blade: Trinity
Long before the Black Panther movie, there was the Blade Trilogy staring Wesley Snipes. A series based on the Marvel’s Blade character. A half breed Vampire, who can withstand sunlight, thus the nickname, “Day Walker.” Watch the first one, ignore the second, and then enjoy the 2004 trilogy wrap up. The third and final Blade film, and a good B-Movie to boot. Not only is Snipes a cold, hard, bad-ass in this movie (as he is in all the Blade films), the director made some interesting casting choices. Blade is assisted in this film by two other Vampire Hunters, played by Ryan Reynolds, and Jessica Biel. My take on Reynolds character is this could have been a post college Van Wilder who made some really bad life choices. Jessica Biel doesn’t talk much, but seriously, she doesn’t have to. Comninic Purcell is the chief bad guy, but supporting villains played by Parker Posey and John Michael Higgins just add moments of joy for anyone who has seen Best in Show or A Mighty Wind. Parker Posey even has a nice serious dramatic scene. There is even an actress best known for her work in the American Pie movies. I kept waiting for her to talk about double clicking her mouse. Fire up the popcorn and enjoy.

Monday Book Pick: The Dracula Tape

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

The Dracula Tape by Fred Saberhagen

Vampires have been all the rage with the kids lately, but back in the mid 1970, Fred Saberhagen wrote one of the best Dracula books ever, IMNSHO. Dracula tells his side of the story told by Bram Stoker. In his version, it is Van Helsing that is the blood thirsty monster and Vlad is the misunderstood hero. A fun read, but better if the you read the Stoker version first.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

It’s a Mary Elizabeth Winstead Hat Trick. In this historical horror/fantasy flick she plays Mary Todd Lincoln. A taller, less crazy, and definitely better looking Mary Todd Lincoln than would be historically accurate. As an escapist action flick, not bad. Good special effects, excellent cast, and it follows the Bond rule of the villain makes the movie. In this case, the vampires are very nasty indeed.

Monday Book Pick: Anno Dracula

Monday, June 25th, 2012

Anno Dracula by Kim Newman

Mr. Newman starts with the premise that the so-called “heros” of Bram Stoker’s Dracula screwed the pooch and were slaughtered like the incompetent buffoons they appeared to be. With them out of the way, Dracula pretty much has his bloody way with England. This includes having his bloody way with Queen Victoria. Yup, Prince Consort Dracula. Being a vampire becomes fashionable in Jolly Old England. Causes a bit of an upheaval to the social order. Yup, the Vampires are out of the closet for good. I really enjoyed this book and even better, it is the first in series.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Blade

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Blade

Wesley Snipes plays ‘the Day Walker’, a sorta half Vampire who can withstand daylight, and really, really hates Vampires. They killed his mother you see. Fun flick, got Kung Fu, sword fu, machine pisol fu, and for extra added bonus B-Movie credit, Traci Lords!

Friday B-Movie Pick: Near Dark & Dog Soldiers

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Near Dark and Dog Soldiers

It’s almost Holloween, so today we have a double header of Vampires and Werewolves. The first is a low buget classic from 1987. A group of vampires roaming Oklahoma those recent yet far away days before ubiquitous cell phones, multiple 24/7 news channels and new media news back channels. There is plenty of blood and mayhem to go around in this dark and violent vampire flick that never uses the word “vampire.” Dog Soldiers was made fifteen years later, but has a lot of the same noir grittiness. A small group of British soldiers are dropped into the remote countryside for some “routine” training. Add a group of werewolves that “just happen to be in the area”, and you have a nice flick to get you in the mood for Holloween.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Love at First Bite

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Love at First Bite

From 1979 comes this comic send up of the Dracula legend with a great comic cast. George Hamilton as the Count, Artie Johnson as Renfield, Richard Benjamin as the decendent of Von Helsing (who changed his name to Rosenberg for “professional reasons”), and Susan St. James as the love interest of both Rosenberg and Dracula. The movie starts out with Dracuala being kicked out of Romania by the Communist government and moving to New York City. It is a period piece (late 1970s, complete with a big dance number at a disco), but the gags are great and the cast really delivers.

Friday B-Movie Pick: Near Dark

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I’m ramping up for Halloween with this one.

Near Dark, a dark and bloody story of Vampires roaming the modern American Southwest.  The cast includes Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, Bill Paxton and Tim Thomerson.

The scene where they go into a feeding frenzy at a out of the way bar is worth the price of admission alone.

This was one of my picks for October 31, 2008.
