Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi
When I first heard that John Scalzi wanted to do a reboot of H. Beam Piper‘s “Little Fuzzy“, it made my Sunday SciFi pick for 4/11/10. It’s out now, and I’ve read it (thanks Fred!), and I have to say it’s pretty damn good. Piper purists may yelp because there is no contra-grav, but it’s a bloody reboot! Expect change and embrace it. Scalzi clearly has serious SciFi author chops. He wouldn’t be my first choice for a reboot of Space Viking or Uller Uprising, but the Fuzzy books, sure. My top choice for Space Viking would be David Weber, and John Ringo for Uller Uprising.

Out of the Dark by David Weber
Weber takes a look at a near future Earth invaded by a ruthless alien species. Raw meat for Weber fans right up to the surprise ending. An ending which horked off some fans, but not me. I took at a hat tip to the late Fred Saberhagen.

A film version of “A Princess of Mars”, the first in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars series has been listed on IMDB since 2005.
It’s still listed as in pre-production, with the latest in release dates as 2012. There are also some cast listings. The most interesting is Willem Dafoe as the Green Martian King Tars Tarkas.
As I said before, this film could be amazingly cool or a fiasco of epic proportions. With William Dafoe on board, I’m leaning more toward amazingly cool.
If the four armed Green Martians look sufficently cool, this could be a plus toward getting David Weber & John Ringo‘s March Upcountry made into a film. That would be a good thing.

Each Monday, I post a book I enjoyed and think my dear readers will as well.
The latest was On Basilisk Station by David Weber.
The first book in David Weber’s best selling Honor Harrington series. Often, and accurately called “Horatio Hornblower in Space,” this series tells the tale of an Officer in Royal Manticorian Navy. In this book, she is a Commander and has just received her second “Hyper” command. Set in the far future, the series has a definate “Age of Sail” feel, with missle broadsides instead cannon broadsides.
Here is this year’s archive and last year’s archive.
